Zastosowanie

Konstrukcja there is, jak również there are stosowana jest w sytuacjach, kiedy chcemy powiedzieć, że gdzieś (np. na zdjęciu, w mieście, na stole) coś jest (znajduje się). Np.:

There is a glass on the table.
There are people in the picture.

Powyższe zdania są odpowiedzią na pytanie co gdzie się znajduje z naciskiem na co. Gdybyśmy chcieli odpowiedzieć na pytanie gdzie się coś znajduje z naciskiem na gdzie, powiemy:

A glass is on the table.
The people are in the picture.

Budowa

To, czy użyjemy there is czy there are, zależy od liczby podmiotu, czyli kierujemy się zasadami, które mówią nam, że is stosujemy z liczbą pojedynczą, a are z mnogą:

There is a pink house on our street.
There are people standing in front of it.

Uwaga! W formie skróconej (there's) może występować wyłącznie konstrukcja there is.

Inne formy

Konstrukcji there is i there are możemy również używać w przeczeniach i pytaniach, a także w innych czasach oraz z czasownikami modalnymi. We wszystkich przypadkach należy stosować reguły gramatyczne:
